Does the Government have the political will to change direction on UK energy policy? asks Arthur D. Little

The UK Government’s first annual Energy Statement recently acknowledged the ongoing need to realign UK energy policy in order to implement an environmentally responsible, secure and cost-efficient energy infrastructure.  Global management consultancy Arthur D. Little believes that the inconsistent policies so far pursued seem destined to deliver a high cost, low quality infrastructure – and asks whether the current Government is willing to turn this situation around.

Central to the Government’s target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 34% below their 1990 levels by 2020 are the increase in the proportion of electricity generated from renewable sources, and energy efficiency measures. In Realigning UK Energy Policy, Arthur D. Little analyses how realistic and cost-effective some of the measures outlined for reaching this target really are:

Arthur D. Little: m-payments in M-BRIC to reach approximately USD 60bn by 2015

The time is right for service providers to enter M-BRIC m-payment markets, according to a recent study by global management consultancy Arthur D. Little. While only 32 million people in M-BRIC currently use mobile financial services, Arthur D. Little projects that this number will increase to 290 million users by 2015.

According to ‘M-Payments in M-BRIC’, mobile financial services are currently experiencing a global surge. While every second person owns a mobile device in M-BRIC countries, 70% of their population is currently excluded from the banking sector.  As such, there is great potential for new entrants to actively shape the local m-payment market.

Is Nuclear New Build more a Management than a Technology Challenge? asks Arthur D. Little

Global management consultancy Arthur D. Little has produced a major new study that examines the management and technology issues facing nuclear new build projects and provides a comprehensive framework to help owners overcome potential obstacles and reduce risk. Arthur D. Little: Business is back in Business

The majority of CXOs across all industries predict businesses will return to pre-crisis activity levels by the end of 2011. This is the finding of a survey by global management consultancy Arthur D. Little of 338 executives worldwide, with 71% of CXOs believing their businesses will fully recover. This is a more prudent outlook compared to the consultancy’s survey conducted last year, where 84% of executives predicted this result. Yet, the popular notion of the “new normal”, commonly referring to a downsizing of the global economy, has been shown to have few adherents, with 75% of executives estimating growth to be at least as high as before the crisis took hold.

Executives’ optimism is linked to the lasting benefits of the fundamental restructuring that businesses could not avoid. These include lower working capital, higher productivity through redundancies, re-engineered processes, higher capacity through cutbacks, and a rationalized manufacturing and logistics footprint – going back to basics.

DRM must evolve to satisfy needs of both content owners and end users or face abandonment, says Arthur D. Little

Arthur D. Little's new report, "Untying the Gordian Knot", examines the current state of play in Digital Rights Management (DRM) and concludes that systems must evolve to deliver both acceptable content protection for owners and maximum interoperability for users, otherwise DRM may be abandoned altogether.

While DRM has been used since the early days of digital content distribution, it has long been a source of controversy, with complex proprietary systems creating integration headaches for manufacturers and distributors, and preventing end users from legitimately sharing content across different devices and platforms.  The rise of digital piracy can even be part-blamed on the inflexibility of traditional DRM systems, with users resorting to file sharing as not only the cheapest, but also easiest way of accessing and sharing content.

Arthur D. Little: Electro-mobility players must do more to develop business models

Green market challenge goes beyond developing new technology

In the current automotive crisis, everyone is plugging into electro-mobility. Many OEMs are investing in e-technology development and governments across the globe are rolling out subsidy plans. However, little focus is placed upon developing adequate business models. According to “Winning on the E-mobility Playing Field”, the latest Automotive Viewpoint from global management consultancy Arthur D. Little, OEMs, utilities, infrastructure, leasing companies and service providers will all be competing for consumers’ mobility budgets and must identify the right business model to fully capitalize on the green market.
